at sea

Explanation: What is an idiom?

you're baffled or not sure what to do.

Context:

-Hi Kim, how are your studies going?

-Everything's ok, thank you for asking Ben. What about you? Are you doing well?

-Well, quite frankly I'm at sea at the moment. I thought I could quickly finish my degree and start something new but it's actually not as easy as I had first thought.

-I guess you have to be patient and see how matters evolve. If I were you, I'd focus on today. Don't spend all your time thinking about the future.

-Hm, maybe you're right. I'll try finishing this degree one step at a time and then plan other things. Thanks Kim!

-No problem!

Notes:

This idiom dates from the days of sail when they didn't have accurate navigational aids. Any ship that was out of sight of land was in an uncertain position.
