Kiss of death

Explanation: What is an idiom?

Something which seems like a blessing, but will in fact lead inevitably to disaster or failure.

Context:

"What do you reckon about Oxford this Saturday?"

"Well, I reckon we haven't got a cat in hell's chance."

"Oh, old Pierce said that after last week's win against Grimsby we've turned the corner and we going to improve for the rest of the season."

"Well, that's a kiss of death if ever I've heard one."

Notes:

A kiss from a Mafia boss was a sign that you were going to be murdered. In fact, this kiss of death also occurred in ancient Rome.
